HOLLOW TREE RESTORATION ART PROJECT
"BARKART" by Mary Lynne Jewell

Mary Lynne Jewell is a forest-based Canadian Vancouver visual artist who is excited about the "awe" power of Stanley Park's Hollow Tree.

Jewell works on old-growth trees and specializes in painted monoprints of their bark. This technique is called "frottage", which is a type of alternative painting that reproduces a direct impression of the bark surface applied with acrylic paint and a roller. Jewell emulates First Nations artists who celebrate a spiritual oneness with nature. She also follows in the footsteps of Emily Carr, who painted in the forest of Stanley Park when she moved to Vancouver.

The original painting of the Hollow Tree for this series was completed during the autumn of 2008 in acrylic on vellum with a finished dimension of 16"X20". It is an authentic reproduction of the surface and exposed inner layers of the wood of the Hollow Tree.

A digital scan of the original painting was used as the model to make giclée prints reproduced on acid-free paper in pigment-based inks. Each image is 5"X7" matted in white at 8"X10". Each of the 15 prints is a signed original and is created by the artist's own hand.
